The Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha officially re-opens on 18 July 2016, which is Nelson Mandela International Day as well as Madiba’s birthday. Trellidor Mthatha, with Head Office support, installed Trellidor Clear Guard security barriers to the museum windows.
On permanent display in the museum are gifts Madiba received from the South African and international communities. Temporary exhibitions that are changed on a regular basis tell the story of his life and struggle.
Protection for historic windows
Our brief was to secure the 75 teak windows in the museum section of the Bhunga Building, where the museum is housed. It is a beautiful, historic property so whatever we installed had to be sensitive to its history and neo-classical style.
Renovations to the building, which dates back to 1927, had to be completed within the guidelines provided by the South African Heritage Resources Agency, and this included any security measures. After an in-depth consultation process, Trellidor Clear Guard security screens were approved for the project.
Architect Johann Schoeman of Impendulo Design Architects said: “This product ticked a number of boxes. They physically prevent the passing of artefacts through the windows; they screen out UV rays that would be harmful to the items on display; they block out wind when the windows are open; they stop pigeons from getting inside the building; and they can open up for easy window cleaning.”
