How to Protect Aluminium Windows

Aluminium windows are a feature of many modern houses, especially in coastal areas where corrosion is an ever-present problem due to the harsh environment. Corrosion can also shorten the life span of burglar proofing. So how do you overcome the problems of protection from a break-in as well as the weakening of burglar bars through weathering?

One of the homes we photographed recently along the Cape coast had the answer: Trellidor Cottage Guard. It’s a premium quality burglar proofing because of its strengthening and anti-corrosion features, but it also looks good, so was a first choice for the designers of this home. Take a look at the photos and you’ll see why.

Picture perfect stairway windows

The first picture is of a huge window in a stairway that looks onto a garden. It brings loads of light into the home but is also a security risk a few well-timed blows to the window pane with the right tool and burglars have easy access. The owners are often away so they didn’t want to take the risk of leaving this window unsecured.

The local Trellidor franchise owner suggested Cottage Guard because style-wise it ties in nicely with the balustrading and could be powder coated in a colour to match. Each Cottage Guard unit is fully framed and fixed into the substrate surrounding the windows, adding to its strength.

There are very few burglar bars on the market that can compete with Trellidor Cottage Guard. It is made from square aluminium tubing with a reinforced steel bar through the centre. There are no welds, so no weak points in terms of corrosion. Plus, they are custom made to fit the space, making sure that they fit properly.

The second picture is of a pretty kitchen with three aluminium awning windows and an attractive view. They are on the ground floor and easily accessible to robbers, so they’ve been secured with custom made Trellidor Cottage Guard burglar proofing.

The burglar bars are powder coated to match the window frames so that they blend in as far as possible. They were also designed to accommodate the window handles so that they are unobstructed and accessible for opening and closing or cleaning.

What about rust?

Trellidor has an in-house powder coating plant similar to those used in the auto manufacturing trade. It includes a pre-treatment process that enhances corrosion and UV resistance and this is what makes Cottage Guard ideal for coastal and inland conditions.

The process increases the lifespan of the barrier by retaining its quality finish and resistance to corrosion. As long as the barriers are cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions, they’ll give you many years of protection.
