We’re in the middle of the Spring season and of course, as per tradition, Spring Cleaning is at the forefront of all planning. House corners that gathered dust during Winter need to be gunned for & cleaned out; those old Summer shorts you had at the back of your wardrobe need washing; and your beautiful but grown neglected aluminium blinds finally have your attention too. So how to do this?
Our job is to help you tackle the aluminium blinds first. These can be tricky to clean as they easily attract dust, grime, cooking residue and really, just every other particle. Given the delicacy and difficulty of maintaining this window treatment favourite in many homes, here’s a guide on how to get your aluminium blinds squeaky clean in no time.
What you’ll need:
- Water
- Microfibre cloth
- Dishwashing liquid
- Soft brush/Sponge
- Bathtub
1. Light Dirt
If your blinds have light amounts of dust or other dirt, you can simply clean them using a microfibre cloth. Gently wipe them starting from the centre, moving to the left-hand side; and then from the centre again to the right-hand side. Change the cloth after wiping a few times to ensure proper cleaning.
2. Moderate soiling and grime
This follows the same method from above. However, in this case, cleaning with soapy water is advised.
If you have a lot of aluminium blinds in your home, approaching them singularly as described can get tedious so the best way would be to take each set of blinds one at a time and let them soak in your bathtub filled with water containing a mild solution of dishwashing cleaning liquid. Use a soft brush or sponge to go over both sides. After all that is done, empty your bathtub and fill it with clean water to rinse. Ensure that you rinse every set properly to avoid spotting from the soap.
3. Heavy grime & kitchen residue
Prolonged periods of neglect can cause very stubborn stains – especially on aluminium blinds situated in the kitchen or near cooking areas. In this situation, a bathtub wash is also recommended but using hot water this time. Be sure to repeat the wash & rinse process several times until the stains are gone.
Other helpful maintenance tips:
- Dust aluminium blinds in bedrooms & living rooms once a month.
- With blinds in kitchen areas, we recommend cleaning them once a week.
- Do not use a vacuum cleaner as it can easily damage your blinds.
- Once your aluminium blinds are clean, consider using dusting spray on them to discourage dust & dirt.

Well, then, Spring Cleaning time!
