A roller shutter is made up of steel or aluminium horizontal slats that are raised to open the shutter and lowered to close it. They provide outstanding protection from burglary, unauthorised access, and weather. How strong roller shutters are will depend on the mechanics of their design. Rollerstyle shutters are available in different strength models to suit the security risk profile of the location, from one suitable for medium risk homes to a highly specialised anti-lift option.
Roller shutter features
No matter which model you choose, rollerstyle shutters have several features in common:
- Superb strength
Once fully closed in the ‘lockdown’ position, roller shutters are extremely hard to break through or lift up. - Perfect for homes and offices
Rollerstyle shutters are made from aluminium, which is lighter and less noisy than steel. This makes them ideal for doors and windows in homes and offices. - Neat and unobtrusive
Closed shutters are slimline and tidy, with no external clutter. When opened, they roll up overhead and are hidden inside a shutter box, completely out of sight. - Compact shutter box
The shutter box used to house an open shutter is one of the most compact on the market. It can be hidden inside a ceiling cavity if the location allows for this. - Automated, manual or both
Roller shutters can be motorised and remote controlled. An optional manual override system is also available and a good idea if power outages are a risk. - Provides climate control
Window and door roller shutters are not only for protection against criminals. They also help to insulate the interior from weather, light and sound penetration.
How roller shutters work
Rolling shutters and how they work are more familiar than we realise. They’re fitted to many shop fronts, whether they are retail outlets on a street or in a shopping mall. We don’t usually notice them until they’re rolled down for protection. This is one of their most attractive features and one of the reasons why they’re gaining popularity for use in homes too.
Here’s how they work:
- Horizontal slats are hinged together to form a ‘curtain.’
- The curtain slides up and down inside side guide channels, one on either side of the curtain. These guide channels can be neatly recessed into the walls.
- The curtain is suspended from a shutter box overhead and rolls up into and out of the shutter box via the side guide channels.
- The shutter does not need a floor channel, so there is no cutting into floor tiles or carpet and no tripping hazard.
- Motorised roller shutters are controlled using a hand-held remote control or wall-mounted control panel. These controls can be programmed to operate all the roller shutters at the same time or individually.
- Manual override kits can be used if there is a power failure, and the roller shutter is then opened or closed using a crank handle.
The benefits of fitting roller shutters
Rollerstyle shutters are a quick and simple security solution. Quick because the installation process causes minimal disruption and simple because they can be installed internally or externally, during the construction of new premises or to an existing building.
They can be fitted to a wide variety of openings including:
- External doors
- Windows
- Doorway between garage and house
- Passages and staircases (to provide a safe haven)
An entire house can be locked down with roller shutters fitted externally to all exit doors and windows. The strength of this wall of shutters keeps holiday homes safe from vandalism and theft when the owner are away. Or secures a family home at night against intruders while the occupants are asleep.
In general, criminals go to great lengths to avoid being caught in the act of a break in, which means trying to do it quickly and quietly. Anyone that tries to loosen or break through these roller shutters risks being discovered because it certainly won’t be a fast, silent job and they’re unlikely to succeed anyway due to the strength of the shutters.
