4 Reasons to Consider Roller Shutters for External Security

How roller shutters work

Roller shutter doors are doors made of horizontal slats that roll up vertically into a shutter box when not needed. They are either manually operated or motorised, sliding up and down inside wall tracks. They provide a high level of security when closed. For example, they roll down as storefront protection after trading hours. In homes, they are a good choice of external security to protect doors and windows from intruders.

Roller shutters should not be confused with roller blinds. The difference between roller blinds and roller shutters is that blinds are made from fabric and are mainly fitted to windows to provide privacy. Roller shutters are made from steel or aluminium. They are fitted to windows and doors to provide protection from intruders as well as harsh weather.

Here are 4 reasons why you should choose external roller shutters:

  1. Security roller shutters are strong

Roller shutters are one of the strongest forms of protection you can install. Trellidor shutters made from aluminium are as strong as high-quality steel retractable sliding gates. The Trellidor Lockdown Shutter locks down so tightly that even a forklift can’t lift the shutter curtain.

Roller shutter doors are made-to-measure, so they can be fitted to doors and windows of just about any size. If fitted externally to all the doors and windows in a building, it is extremely difficult for anyone to break into it.
  1. Security roller shutters are practical

Roller shutter doors made from aluminium have a slim profile that does not require much wall space. They slide up and down inside narrow side guide channels that can be recessed into the wall, and roll up into a neat, compact shutter box when not in use.

These doors don’t need a bottom track so there is no cutting into the floor, which could damage tiles or other types of flooring.

Whether fitted externally or internally, roller shutters can be retrofitted. So if you move into a new home with no security or have experienced a break-in and want to avoid a repeat incident, roller shutters are simple to fit to your doors and windows as protection.

They’re an effortless way to shut out bad weather and extend your living space when installed at the edge of your entertainment area. Here they provide superb security when locked down because they block out heat, wind, and rain
  1. Security roller shutters are durable

Use a premium quality (salt free) car wash liquid, mixed with water as per the manufacturer’s directions. Use this mix and a soft cotton cloth to clean the entire roller shutter ‘curtain’ i.e. the slats that make up the shutter. Also wipe down the side guide channels in the walls.

Never use abrasive cleaners, detergent based cleaners, or solvent based cleaners such as scouring agents, dishwashing liquids, washing powders, thinners etc. These could adversely affect the expected life of the product.

Hard to reach areas may require the use of a soft nylon bristle brush like a dishwashing brush.

Dry the roller shutter slats and guides with a soft cotton cloth or chamois.

Do not try to clean the motor inside the shutter box, but you can clean the box itself, wiping it clean as above.

It is a good idea to call your supplier in to check and service the motor once a year if your external security roller shutter is motorised.
  1. Security roller shutters are convenient

External roller shutters are one of the most convenient forms of security on the market. This is because they can be fully automated so that you open and close them with a hand-held remote or a control panel fixed to the wall. They can be integrated into a Smart Home central control system if you have one.

Automated roller shutters be opened manually if there is a power failure, so make sure that your supplier includes a manual override crank handle.

Battery back-up is available from suppliers too and very convenient to have if you experience frequent power outages.

If you have external roller shutters installed right around your home, when you lock up at night you can do this at the touch of a button, creating a safe zone to give you peace of mind while you sleep. Your home will also be fully protected when you go away on holiday or leave it unoccupied while at work.
